Hometown favourite Dave Allen is set to box Croatian giant Filip Hrgovic at Doncaster’s Eco Power Stadium on Saturday, May 16th.
Today marked the formal launch of the blockbuster clash, with the two boxers meeting face-to-face for the first time this afternoon.
Allen, affectionately known as “The White Rhino” and nicknamed the “Doncaster De La Hoya”, is preparing for the fight of his life, right here in the heart of Doncaster.
“It’s the biggest night of my life”, said 34-year-old Allen.
“I’m Donny through and through, and I’m proud to bring one of the heavyweight champions to my home town in Doncaster.”
Standing at a massive 6ft6, Croatian heavyweight Hrgovic is set to give Allen a tough match.
“I know Dave has been training hard, but I’ll be ready for everything and will take care of business”, said Olympic medalist Hgrovic.
Billed a “David vs Goliath” battle, the Doncaster favourite is quite the underdog in this lineup.
Hrgovic has won 19 of his 20 professional bouts, with an impressive 14 of those victories coming by knockout.
But Allen says he has never trained harder for what he deems his personal headline event.
“Fighting Filip is my world title, my cup final, this is everything to me. I never dreamed of having an opportunity like this.
“If he thinks I’m gonna be an easy fight, he’ll be in for a rude awakening. Filip will see that on the other side of the ring”, said Allen.
The clash is huge news for Doncaster, as the Eco-Power stadium and home of Doncaster Rovers football club gears up for a hopeful sell-out.
Queensbury promoter and boxing promotion legend, Frank Warren, said: “May 16th will be a magical experience for Dave Allen.
“This will be a huge occasion for the city of Doncaster and for the fans who have backed Dave throughout his career.”
Pre-sale tickets are now available on the Queensbury site.
